The Citizenry are the elite leaders and Fury Crafters of Alera. They are allowed to attend college, vote, and enter the Senatorium in Alera Imperia. They are allowed to become senators, legates, etc. They can challenge another via the Juris Macto. Their word is gold against a nobody slave, freeman ——any non-citizen. The ranks of the Citizenry are as follows, as best as can be figured, from lowest rank to highest:

  • Steadholder — The head of a steadholt. A provisional rank - a Steadholder is only considered a Citizen on his steadholt and loses the privileges when off it.
  • Count/Countess — Presides over a small number of steadholts, their immediate lord, such as old Gram, Count of Garrison in book 1
  • Lord/Lady — Rules a section of a High City's land. May be the seneschal, etc.
  • High Lord /High Lady — De facto rulers of the High Cities and all land within their borders.
  • First Lord/Lady — The leader of Alera, the First Lord is subject only to the wishes of the Senate and the laws of the Realm. Typically the single most powerful furycrafter in the Realm, the First Lord wields extraordinary power through the fury Gaius Sextus called “Alera.”
  • Legion captains and knights like Sir Miles also fit in here somewhere, perhaps??

Entering the ranks of the Citizenary[]

There are 3 ways to become a Citizen, apart from by birthright:

  1. Serving a term as combat personnel in the Aleran Legions while distinguishing oneself.
  2. Defeat a Citizen in a duel for their Citizenship; similar to a Juris Macto but not the same
  3. Being named a Steadholder, Count, or Lord.
